Overview
Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery is a surgical procedure designed to cosmetically treat the appearance of the upper and/or lower eyelids. It can address excess skin of the eyelids that may make you look tired, puffiness caused by fat deposits, which produce a more rested look.
Benefits
Eyelid surgery offers significant benefits for patients, both functional and aesthetic. Patients can have a more visibility, a rejuvenated appearance by reducing bags and puffiness, smoothing skin and improving facial harmony. In addition to the functional improvements, many patients experience a professional and social impact from a more approachable, energetic appearance.
Who is a Candidate?
A candidate for eyelid surgery is typically someone who experiences drooping of the eyelids, excessive skin of the upper or lower eyelids. It can improve vision by removing sagging skin that affects your visual field. Ideal candidates are in good overall health, do not smoke, and have realistic expectations about the outcome of the surgery. It’s important for potential candidates for eyelid surgery to consult with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons to discuss their symptoms, goals, and any potential risks associated with the procedure.
What to Expect/Recovery Time
Blepharoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure and patients go home the same day. The choice of incision depends on what surgery you need. Upper eyelid surgery incisions are placed in the natural crease of the eyelid fold. Lower eyelid surgery incision can occur under the eye or transconjuctival (with the inside of the lower lid). Eyelid incisions tend to heal very well and has minimal visible scarring because of the location of incisions.
Patients may feel discomfort and swelling in the face that is well tolerated with prescribed medication. It’s important to follow all post-operative instructions carefully.
Most patients can return to light activities after surgery but should avoid vigorous exercise and heavy lifting until cleared by their surgeon. Regular follow-up appointments with your surgeon are important to monitor healing and address any concerns during the recovery process.
